Use euros, not old lev advice
The euro is Bulgaria's currency for your May 2027 visit. Many older guides still talk about the Bulgarian lev because they were written before the changeover. Treat lev prices, lev cash advice and lev conversion examples in those pages as historical unless you have a current official source.
You do not need to arrive knowing a lev conversion table. Read the amount shown in euros, keep your receipts when useful, and recheck any time-sensitive payment information before you travel.
Everyday payments
Use a card where it is accepted
A card is convenient for businesses with a working terminal. Before the trip, make sure your card is enabled for international use and that you know how your bank handles foreign travel, cash withdrawals and payment notifications.
Keep a second payment method separate from your main card. If a terminal is unavailable, offline or not accepted, you want a simple fallback rather than a problem at the till.
Small payments
Carry some euro cash
Carry a small amount of euro cash in notes and coins for small places, temporary sellers or any moment when a card terminal is not available. Keep it modest and replenish it as needed; there is no reason to carry your whole trip budget in your wallet.
When a terminal or ATM offers a choice of currency, read the screen before you approve the transaction and make sure the amount and currency are what you expect.
Tipping
Around 10 percent is a simple rule of thumb for good service. Round up or adjust it when that feels more appropriate. Check the bill or terminal first so you know whether a service charge has already been included, and do not feel that a tip should turn into a second undisclosed charge.
Your low-stress money plan
- Arrive ready to pay in euros.
- Bring one main card and a separate backup payment method.
- Keep a small amount of euro cash for places where cards are not an option.
- Check the currency and total on a terminal before confirming.
- Use around 10 percent as your starting point for a good-service tip.
